Dental Sealants

Even with proper brushing techniques, the back teeth can be especially difficult to keep clean. A sealant creates a smooth barrier, allowing tooth-damaging culprits to easily rinse away without becoming lodged in the pits and grooves of back teeth.

Why sealants?

The grooved surfaces of molars act as a trap, housing small food particles and bacteria which can begin to deteriorate teeth. Applied directly to the chewing surfaces of teeth, dental sealants:

  • Create an easy-to-clean surface
  • Prevent food particles from building up
  • Protect from cavity development
  • Guard against bacteria that causes tooth decay
  • Blend well with natural tooth color
  • Withstand the wear and tear of daily use

Are dental sealants for everyone?

Sealants help anyone whose teeth have deep grooves that are prone to collecting food. We highly recommend that children and teens get sealants as soon as their adult molars come in as a preventative step to keep from needing fillings, crowns, or other more invasive (and expensive) procedures later. We may also recommend applying sealants to baby teeth to prevent a young child from developing cavities.

Simple, pain-free application

The experience of getting sealants is painless. Prior to the application, the teeth are thoroughly cleaned. Once the teeth have been prepared, an adhesive material is painted onto the surface of each molar tooth and will be allowed to set for a few minutes.

The tooth is again cleaned to rid the area of any residue, and the sealant is painted onto each tooth. The material is allowed to dry for a few minutes before the patients leaves.
